Forever the Foreigner Workshop: A History of Anti-Asian Oppression in America

On Saturday, March 27, Freedom Lifted partnered with Freda Lin of the YURI Education Project to host a workshop for almost 50 youth and adults on the history of anti-Asian oppression in the U.S.

In the “Forever the Foreigner” workshop, Freda led the group in a discussion on Asian American identity formation, media and pop culture representations, and key events in the 20th Century that activated awareness of oppression of the community and grassroots resistance. We then broke into youth-only, educator-only, and intergenerational groups to process what we learned and brainstorm how we can work in solidarity to address the issue without invoking the prison industrial complex.

This workshop was dedicated to the eight people murdered in Atlanta on March 16, six of whom were women of Asian descent.

For privacy reasons, we are not making the workshop recording public. However, a padlet of resources shared is available to the public.

YURI is currently working with Freedom Lifted to release an online course for educators who teach Asian American history also entitled “Forever the Foreigner.” We anticipate the course will be released in late fall 2021.
