This year, Freedom Lifted tours will add to its Alabama itinerary an extensive visit to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice – the first memorial dedicated to victims of racial terror lynching in America. The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) will open the memorial and a new museum dedicated to slavery and its legacy in Montgomery, Alabama, on April 26, 2018. This project will be the most ambitious in the nation on this topic.
The National Memorial for Peace and Justice will acknowledge an era of racial terror in the United States when thousands of African Americans were lynched and publicly tortured, sometimes in the presence of thousands of people.
A few blocks away from the memorial, EJI will open The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration, which explores slavery, lynching, segregation, and mass incarceration in America on a site where enslaved people were once warehoused.
Participants on Freedom Lifted tours to Alabama after April 26, 2018, will visit both the memorial and museum.
